Our Wallpaper Consultants Help You Determine Whether It’s the Right Choice for Your Home

The paint vs. wallpaper debate has been going on for as long as there has been a choice. Some see it as strictly a matter of taste but there’s more to it than that. A number of factors beyond the bottom line need to be considered including the function of the space and the condition of your walls. With all the beautiful paint colours available today and all the fabulous fabrics, patterns and textures that go into making today’s wallpaper the choice can be confusing, so we polled our wallpaper consultants for their opinion on the matter.

Our Wallpaper Consultants Chime In

When determining whether wallpaper is right for your home in Vaughan, Woodbridge, Thornhill, King City or Maple we think it helpful to look at what each medium brings to the table. Paint first.

  • Generally Less Preparation Involved – If you currently have painted walls and they’re in pretty good shape repainting them will require almost no prep work.
  • Better at Hiding Defects – Paint, especially paint with a matte finish, is ideal for concealing minor flaws in the wall.
  • Great for DIYers – Painting a room is the ultimate weekend do-it-yourself project and doesn’t require specialized knowledge or expensive equipment.
  • More Affordable – Painting is generally cheaper than wallpapering, though the difference is not as extreme as you might think especially if you’re using top-of-the-line paints.
  • Greater Variety – You can have the colour consultants at the paint store custom blend literally any colour that you can think of. That’s a lot of possible colours.

Now let’s see what our wallpaper consultants consider to be the positive aspects of wallpapering.

  • A Good Investment – While wallpaper may cost more up front chances are it will be with you for many years. Think of how much you’ll be spending on paint over the next two decades and you get an idea why some folks think wallpaper is actually the smarter financial choice.
  • Durability – As mentioned above wallpaper lasts, and lasts, and lasts…. High quality wall coverings should last you anywhere from 10 – 20 years. In cases where a room is not used very much it may last far longer than that.
  • Prestige – Let’s be honest. Wallpaper when done well delivers the oohs and aahs in a way paint can only dream of. If you are intent on making the neighbours jealous wallpaper is the logical choice.
  • Versatility – Wallpaper today can be made to serve a variety of design masters. From staying quietly in the background to making bold conceptual statements about the world we live in and everything in between.

While there is no bad choice here our wallpaper consultants suggest that if you are planning on doing the job yourself and are on a somewhat limited budget, painting may be your best option. However, if you plan on hiring a professional to do the work and you really want to bowl over family, friends and neighbours you can’t make a much bigger impression than with today’s beautiful, durable wallpapers. Mistakes to Avoid When Putting Up Wallpaper in your King City, Thornhill, Maple, Woodbridge or Vaughan home

Wallpaper has the ability to transform the interior of any room and enhance its appearance. It’s available in a wide range of different colours and patterns, can be hung in most rooms and is relatively affordable. However, these benefits can only be experienced if it is hung to a high standard in the first place, which as anyone that has ever completed a DIY wallpaper installation will tell you, is easier said than done. We get asked for advice about wallpaper installation all the time in our paint store and we’ve always found that by knowing what you definitely shouldn’t do, you have a much greater chance of success. For that reason we’re going to talk you through some of the most common mistakes that have been made by homeowners in Vaughan, Maple, Thornhill and King City over the years.

Avoid a DIY Wallpaper Installation Nightmare in Your Home

Hanging wallpaper yourself can be an incredibly frustrating experience if you have never done it before and errors can result in wasted money and a lot of lost time. Ensure your attempted installation runs much more smoothly by avoiding the following mistakes:

  • Forgetting to Prime the Walls – Many people see wallpaper as a great way to “cover up” imperfections on the walls in their home, but unless the walls are properly prepared and primed before the wallpaper is applied, these imperfections will often show through the paper. The wall should always be level and clean before you start wallpapering.
  • Wallpapering in High Temperatures – It’s best to avoid installing wallpaper in the middle of summer if you can avoid it, since the high temperatures may dry the adhesive out, leading to a range of different problems, such as paper that curls or that just won’t seem to sit right.
  • Going in an Upward Direction – To get best results don’t start at the bottom of the wall with your wallpaper. Start by attaching your wallpaper at the top of the wall and work your way downwards. This reduces the likelihood of you creasing the paper or causing air bubbles.
  • Not Having All Tools to Hand – This is a rookie error and one that can often have some potentially serious consequences. In the heat of the moment, if you can’t quite reach something or can’t find it, you could damage the wallpaper unintentionally and cause wastage. One of the most important tools to have is a good sharp blade that is capable of making clean cuts in the paper.

Wallpapering is a minefield and whether you’re looking for some DIY advice or you’re looking for a professional that can take care of the job for you, Centro Paint & Decor is always willing to help!
